Words whispered through prison bars loose their charm. She hadn't been expecting much of a busy day. Too bad, she'd been wrong -- her intuition usually never laid her astray, but today, she'd failed to take into account how quickly time seemed to pass when she danced. For a moment, a small smile graced her lips; the thrill of dancing briefly returning to her veins as she strode down the sidewalk -- steps as light and graceful, as if the world was her ballroom.
Over her shoulder, a small duffle bag was slung, carrying her ballet shoes and her practice clothes. Her eyes were still heavily made up, with black eyeliner, thanks to the new role she'd been practicing for. She'd had little time to fix her hair afterwards, but the mid-length, light brown locks cascaded down past her shoulders gently, laying over the flowing white top she had on. Yes, she was tired -- but, as always -- she was dressed very well, nothing out of place; aside from the dark eyeliner, which looked pretty, but wasn't much of her style.
In her mind, the music still flowed easily from the small stereo tucked in the corner of the studio; it's soft melodies perfectly controlled to her movements. She'd worked alone the whole day -- the day off. But perhaps that was one of her problems; she couldn't relax, not until she was perfect. Her routine still needed to acquire the effortlessness which she always strove for -- and though her director told her she was doing excellently, she put his words out of her mind -- more work was what she needed.
And so, she'd stayed. Stayed until the owners arrived to lock the place up, and kicking her out, back into the real world; away from the music and the life of the dance. She hadn't even eaten, the whole day, aside from breakfast, and was ravenous for some sort of meal. Ava's eyes flicked from face to face as she strode along the sidewalk, the heels of her silver shoes barely making a sound; her steps so light. But each step pulled at her already exhausted muscles, and that she couldn't ignore.
There seemed to see a man ahead, stumbling through the stream of city dwellers, sauntering between them, as if he had no idea where he was going. She could see other walkers dodging out of his way, much like he tried to avoid them; though occasionally, even frequently, glancing over his shoulder. Ava half wondered if he was a thief, and immediately clutched her bag closer -- her ballet shoes may be worthless to a stranger, but they were part of her life, who she was.
As she continued to walk, her pace slowed, slender, dark eyebrows pulling slightly together in confusion as the young man stumbled around her, offering a nod -- though his eyes seemed distant, seeing something other than what she saw -- as if he was looking at another world.
Hesitating, Ava bit her lip lightly, indecisive, before, sighing to herself, she walked closer to the hallucinating young man, "Excuse me . . . are you all right?" she asked, her soft, velvet voice composed -- not at all giving away the fact that she was confused by his antics. Her little ploy of acting didn't apply here, and she didn't bother to pull on the mask she often wore about strangers, instead -- she allowed herself to act as she would . . . forgetting the usual, sly mask she tended to wear.

He pushed away his mental issue, his eyes focused on her for a few moments before he shrugged his shoulders. He had seen her once before... this must have been the young woman he had dodged in attempt to get over here and be alone. His eyes followed her mouth and them moved to her eyes as she spoke. He wasn't interested in her worries for him, wasn't even remotely interested. Instead he occasionally sent a glance just over her right shoulder where he saw the man whom he had been arguing with speaking with him in a hushed tone, about how he should have just left her alone, seeing as she was nothing to him and he was nothing to her. But instead he ignored his voices, hoping that if he angered them he would merely succeed in getting them to leave him alone. I am just fine, why do you ask? his voice was rough, he noticed, in comparison to her's. it seemed almost like his voice was shaking just as he imagined his hands to be as he stuffed them into his pockets. he didn't want to stand around and talk to a stranger all day and he couldn't help but shift uncomfortably from one foot to another, knowing that he would have preferred to just have been left alone. His eyes narrowed as he glared at his voice, the man that stood just over her shoulder and gave him a mental shove, attempting to make him go away. It took a few moments, but then he finally disappeared as he focused his gaze back to Ava. He didn't know her name or anything about her, but he thought of her as someone who was only in this world to disregard him, to send him off to an institute just as everyone else seemed to want to do with him lately.
&&. His uneasy gaze transformed into a glare. He hated being who he was and hated being what he was. He wanted nothing more than to be a little less... insane as everyone thought he was. He glared after her again before lowering his voice, his head bowing so only she could hear his words. why the hell do you care if i am in pain or not? go be like everyone else in this damn society and pass on by. if they can, so can you. he snapped and turned his body back to the massive swarm of people and prepared to weave his way back in and walk out of her life just as he had accidentally walked in.

Words whispered through prison bars loose their charm. Her eyes were fixed upon the young man, slightly narrowed in thought, though they were not unkind. She brushed her wavy locks over her shoulder as she slightly tilted her head, eyeing him with her quiet, though intensely lit, hazel eyes. Their flecks of blue, green and silver seemed merely curious, and slightly indecisive. From the look he was giving her, she guessed he wished her to know she'd made a mistake in inquiring after him. That tended to be her luck with people. Unless she wore the mask.
Her lips parted to answer him, not quite sure of the answer herself, but, whether in vain or not, she'd been ready to make an effort. His sudden, second reply, though, cut her off -- just as she'd been wondering about the constant glares cast over his shoulder.
"Why the hell do you care if I am in pain or not? Go be like everyone else in this damn society and pass on by. If they can, so can you."
For a moment, a blaze of her rebellious spirit flared in her eyes. Her jaw set in annoyance; and though, inside, something whispered in agreement to his words . . . no one had ever cared for her, but she hid that fact . . . kept it well away.
"Maybe because I'm not like everyone else," she replied sharply, eyes narrowed. This little display of her's revealed something of her strong, inner independence. Something that she'd learned through dancing, as well as the trials of her pathetic life. Without her passion, and freedom, life was simply not worth living. Her call was hardened, cooler as she glanced after him -- stepping once after him, gaze penetrating as she met his eyes -- standing shorter than him, her chin tilted up in the slightest way -- though it was very clear; she was unafraid. Perhaps because something in this young man had roused her fiery spirit, reminded her that she loved a challenge.
Like dancing. Like music. Each had a different story to be told.
"No need to bite my head off," she muttered softly, eyeing him with silent thought. Why the hell did she get herself into these messes? Her interest had been picked. But as much as she wished to walk away, the strange pretensions of the man held her in place.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - &&. He didn't listen for very long, his eyes rolled when she claimed not to be like everyone else. You are just like everyone else. Just as I am. You have a heart, it beats. You have a mind that thinks. When you are in pain, you hurt. When you are cut, you bleed. You are just like everyone else. You claim you aren't because everyone does, you think you aren't when everyone is. No one is completely different. There are people out there like me, just as there are people out there like you. As much as you may not want to admit it, it is true. His eyes bore into hers as he preached on and on before finally coming to an end. The worst part was, is that he was always right. There was nothing about her that set her apart from everyone else because everyone was striving to be different and that made them the same.
&&. His eyes danced as he turned his attention back to the crowd, wincing as his voices returned all at once and screamed to be heard as loud and as long as they could. He didn't answer them, didn't look their way, didn't even try to. His heart ached at the sound of death that always seemed to follow him. His voices weren't just annoying, they were also violent, so violent that he feared for his life sometimes. This wasn't one of them, his hallucinations were bad, but they weren't so bad that he couldn't focus on his life. He ran his fingers through his hair and sighed heavily, his eyes narrowed as he looked down at his guest quietly. He knew that he had her interest, which wasn't something he wanted, not even remotely. His eyes danced with pain as he glanced toward her again. He bit his lip and glared down at her. Do me a favor and leave me alone? You are really annoying with your 'i'm not like everyone else'. he spat and glared down at her again. he wasn't in a good mood, he didn't want to stay here, and yet, for some stupid reason; he was here!

Words whispered through prison bars loose their charm. As much as she knew his words to be true, she couldn't grasp them. And that's what annoyed her. Psychologically, she wanted nothing from life but solitude, solitude and dancing . . . dancing until the day she was perfect -- til she could no longer feel the pain, and laugh at her former weaknesses as she might laugh at a humorless joke. "Sure it's true -- but we all wish for things, right?" she asked, tone softened, speaking more to herself than him.
Like her wish for perfection, in dancing . . . somehow, she could relate everything to her passionate love of dancing. Half of her knew perfection was impossible, but half of her dared to challenge the impossible -- she was at war with herself. Constantly.
"Do me a favor and leave me alone? You are really annoying with your 'I'm not like everyone else'."
Her eyes flared for a moment, again frustrated by his superior attitude. "Shouldn't be a problem," she replied quietly, slightly cold in her tone. Society still didn't have a place for her. But a place was something she desperately needed. [/blockquote]

Words whispered through prison bars loose their charm. Ava didn't know whether to feel annoyed, angry, offended . . . confused. Normally, she never allowed herself to be so influenced by others. It was aggravating as hell. He wanted her gone; so be it. It wasn't like she wanted to be criticized by a random stranger off the street. She had things to do . . . places to be . . . practicing, dancing, working, studying. Anything to distract her from the truth. The cold, painful truth. She was all alone in the world. Without her work, without her dancing; she was nothing.
Her eyes, now directed away from the object of her conflicting emotions, were set ahead, though, with a quick glance upwards -- angled from the overhang above them -- the sky had darkened, and had begun a quick downpour. The ever-prepared New Yorkers merely paused for a moment, popping open umbrellas, while some ran to the nearest coffee shops in seek of a dry place to wait it out. Perfect.
For a moment, her eyes closed as she clenched her jaw, running a hand through her hair, and for the moment, forgetting the stranger standing just behind her. The dancer lost in her music -- determined to reach perfection.
His voice shook her, as she was suddenly reminded of reality. She'd stepped a bit too far from under the overhang, and a few drops glistened in the length of her hair as she stepped gingerly back towards him, his voice a call back to the real world. The one where perfection was impossible. "It's all right . . . I'm not in a great mood either." she replied, voice kinder than before, it's sharp edge gone.
Ava's eyes had wandered towards the now empty street, before her eyes were again drawn back to the stranger.
I'm Shane. Who are you?
For a moment, she studied the offered hand; if he was willing to see past their first few argumentative moments, well, so was she. Gripping her bag with her free hand, she gently took his hand -- and though her handshake was firm, her slender hand was lost within the grip of his larger one. Well, a peace offering was a peace offering. She wasn't about to deny it.
"Ava. Ava Knight . . ." she replied, offering something resembling a smile of greeting -- slightly warmed by politeness. What happened now, she really didn't know what to expect.
So far, Shane was filled with mysteries.

He pulled his hand back afterward though, not wanting an awkward moment to occur even though he knew that it all ready had. Shane brushed his hair back and gazed out at the rain, imagining how the could drops would feel on his skin and he almost reached out to set his hand out from under the overhang... almost. His eyes were focused on her face and he noticed how she was rather pretty but didn't say anything more than that. He turned his head to look out the over hang, watching how quickly the street filed out and was nearly empty. He smiled at the thought of being able to walk along the street without being asked what he was doing and he liked it. Even though he had been an outcast for most of his life; that didn't mean he liked it. He liked it almost as much as he liked being alone in the world which was less than anything else. His voices had started because he had felt alone and they continued to develop because he was still alone. But he also knew that his problems wouldn't be gone as soon as he turned his back on them. He would need more help than he got now and if he got any more help, he was sure that he would die first. Shane sighed a little. Nice name. Where you from? Right around here or you from an entirely different state? He hated small talk, but right now, if his voices were gone, he would be glad to talk with someone, anyone. He just hated knowing that he was crazy and everyone else thought so too. But now he had a chance with a girl who didn't know anything about him and thought he was a little more than trustworthy compared to a mugger on the streets, and that was all he needed.

It'd been a moment, before she'd realized she'd mirrored his quiet smile. For a moment, she was suddenly mindful of her appearance. It was pretty typical, but now that she wasn't arguing with Shane, it took only a moment for her to study his features and decide he was actually quite handsome -- aside from the tiredness in his eyes, now that the frown was gone; attractive even. But that never cut it for Ava; she'd never allowed herself to get close to anyone. She was too busy for friends, certainly too busy for a relationship . . . or so she thought. They were only excuses she dished out to ward away the loneliness. The belief that dancing was all she needed was a lie -- meant to persuade herself -- but she was only human, and inside, knew she needed someone. She just chose to ignore it.
The black eyeliner that fringed her lids was nothing short of intense, and though it brought out the blue and green hues of her hazel eyes; it wasn't her. It was her role -- and though she tended to be a little actress amongst strangers, it was not the image she wished to carry when attempting to be sincere. But was that what she was aiming for right now? It was too late to attempt that charming, though mysterious mask -- he'd seen too much of the real her; the imperfect side. The rebellious, independence that she thought marked her as too bold.
"Nice name. Where you from? Right around here or you from an entirely different state?"
Ava's eyes returned in time to note he'd been studying her face, and though, her answer was not at all hesitant, it took her a moment to withdraw from her thoughts, "Thank you. I'm from upstate, actually . . . I came here when I was seventeen," she replied quietly, tucking a stray lock behind her ear, half-turning towards the empty street.
"Do you . . . want to get a drink or something? I'm not planning on walking all the way home in the rain, and I owe you for that argument. That wasn't very polite of me," her invitation was slightly hesitant, as if she was wondering if he'd only be upset by her offer. It was true. She didn't want to get soaked on the way home -- she wasn't dressed for rain, and . . . well, she felt the need to make it up to him. Maybe even get to know him better.
