Sebastian is secretive for a reason. He is aloof and unwilling to form connections with others. He covers this by speaking in riddles and twisting words. He both finds it amusing and uses it to distract people from asking him personal questions. Sebastian Chase Matthews isn't his real name and he isn't a University student, he's just pretending to be one. His real name is Jordan Raymond Carter, and he is a wanted criminal. He was accused of the murder of his younger brother. In reality, his mother who is a drug abuser drowned Jordan's brother in a rage while she was doped up. She overdosed, attacked then 13 Jordan and his brother who was 9. She drowned Jordan's brother in the bathtub and Jordan tried to fight her off. He couldn't fight her and his brother drowned. His mother turned on him, but ran off before completely drowning him. The police arrived and found Jordan soaking wet standing over his brother's body.

Jordan, fearful, fled the scene. The police took this as a sign of guilt and his mother - put into rehab - testified that Jordan had killed her younger son. She lied to protect herself. Jordan fled, renamed himself and traveled to New York where he was able to find a family to take him in. His life has been built on lies and secrecy, so that is what he thrives on. His fear of water stems from his near drowning and the death of his little brother.
