xx. so there she stood, cornered by a large man in the alleyway. her eyes were narrowed and it was easy to see that she was upset. she was silently cursing herself about being there in the first place.
------------------------------------------------- xx. Hail walked through the streets of New York just like every other day. She had become so accustomed to walking in them like an ordinary human being that she had forgotten her promised day in her shifted form. Hail rose her eyes to meet a man that was easily a foot taller than her and his blue eyes seemed warm and inviting. Seeing as she saw no problem with his invitation of dinner after he had accidentally bumped into her and flung the food she was eating on the ground, she figured why not! in her eyes, he was pretty freaking hot and with her gaze focused on the ground, she had missed the betraying smile on his face.
xx. As they walked, he had slipped his arm around her shoulders casually and Hail thought nothing of it, but as the sun began to go down, she had realized that the time was slowly getting later and later and that she would be expected home. Making the decision, she had apologized, explaining that she couldn't stay because she was expected home before dark. But before those words could get out, she was shoved roughly into an alleyway. That's when it hit her like a freight train coming lose off it's tracks, she was in for a world of pain and misery unless she found someone to help her. ------------------------------------------------- xx. so there she stood, cornered by a large man in the alleyway. her eyes were narrowed and it was easy to see that she was upset. she was silently cursing herself about being there in the first place. Hail stared at the wall she was pushed next to, knowing that no matter what, the pain she was going to experience wasn't worth the chance of being exposed and shifting into her otter form to get away. With a frustrated sob she screamed help! please, someone. she sobbed and was slapped violently as she was pushed closer against the wall. she cursed herself and closed her eyes, bracing herself for pain and constantly thinking over and over how stupid she had been for believing a complete stranger and trusting him too.

He scowled to himself as he walked back to his car. That had to have been the worse blind date in history. He'd have to kill his friends for setting him up with the girl. First of all, she hadn't been remotely attractive but Devon wasn't shallow enough that he would have let that stop it from liking her. But it wasn't just her looks, it was her personality. By the time he'd managed to finally get her talking she'd gone on and on about various boring subjects.
So yes, it was a mistake, but he'd been a gentleman and finished dinner with her and then paid the bill, the large bill. That girl had eaten a lot. Her mother picked her up, saving Devon from an awkward ride back to her house.
Devon halted suddenly, sure he'd heard a sound. Then the strangled cry came again, help! please, someone. No way was he imagining that. He followed the sound, his eyes narrowed against a piercing street light. The place more sounds came from was an alley, out of reach of the street lights protective rays. There was a girl in there, he was sure of that, and she was being attacked.
He moved as silently as possible, which wasn't very silently because of the garbage on the ground, but the sounds at the end of the alley covered up the foot steps. The man turned around as Devon came up behind him, giving Devon a quick glimpse in the near-darkness. The man looked young, possibly attractive though Devon couldn't tell. He didn't dwell on it before swinging his arm and letting his fist connect with the mans jaw.
The man cursed, watching Devon and releasing the girl with one hand to rub his jaw. You better not stick around. I called the cops and they'll be here soon, Devon growled, a complete lie though it sounded real enough. He found himself wished he really had called the cops.
Either way it did the job because the man cursed and released the girl, slamming past Devon and raced off with shoes smacking on the concrete. Devon recovered from his stumble and took a few cautious steps towards the girl, his hands up in an attempt to keep her calm. Are you okay?

xx. When he left all she could do was sink to the ground and sit with her arms around her knees. No tears fell, the sobs weren't real. The fear had been and what was about to happened had been more real that she would have liked. But she didn't cry then and she definitely wasn't crying now. Her hazel eyes followed her attacker as he ran out of the alley and then slowly found their way to the man who had helped her. Hail rested her chin on her knees as she looked up at him, her bright red and blaze orange hair hanging into her eyes until she swept it away.
xx. Her lips pursed together as she returned to her normal attitude, the one who hated humans for their stupid and useless thinking. She slowly rose near the corner that she had been pressed into only minutes before and raked her gaze over the guy that had come into the alley to rescue her. In a way, she knew, that she owed him something; but at the same time she felt as though he was no better than the one who had just attacked her. i am fine! she snapped quickly, before sighing and hanging her head. sorry. i don't mean to be rude. thanks. just... i'm not in the best mood, as you can imagine why, and i'm not about to sit here and list my endless thanks to you for walking in a hitting him in the face. Yean, she was different. Different than most. Most guys would expect her to be a little more... thankful. But that wasn't going to happen with Hail. She was one of those girls that lived with being alone and had no problem facing the world alone.[/blockquote]

He watched in concern as the girl sat without speaking, without moving forward. Finally she did answer, and her snappiness surprised him, but not angered. He'd probably be the same, or worse, if he'd been her. sorry. i don't mean to be rude. thanks. just... i'm not in the best mood, as you can imagine why, and i'm not about to sit here and list my endless thanks to you for walking in a hitting him in the face.
Devon's lips twitched into the beginning of a smile, even though it really wasn't a humorous situation, but the girl amused him. He liked her attitude. I'll tell you a secret, honey. I don't want your unending praises of thanks, that's a sign of a weak girl. All I want is to make sure you're okay and see if you need a ride home or something. Devon took a couple of steps back and crouched down, watching her with a furrowed brow. He didn't know exactly what he should do.
He couldn't just leave the girl here, not after what had just nearly happened, but he also couldn't expect him to trust him enough to let him help him, again, not after what just nearly happened. Perhaps he should call the cops, so they could take care of the girl and get a report on the pervert that attacked her. Did you get a good look at the man? Because all that Devon had seen was his face without many details. He'd only gotten a glimpse using the wandering reflection of the light but perhaps the girl had gotten a good look at him before.

xx. Hail shrugged and sighed quietly, watching him with little interest as she walked around him and toward the opening of the alley, feeling only slightly safer as she walked into the light. But it was still dark out and so that didn't help all too much. thanks, but i really don't have anywhere to go. She said over her shoulder and looked around quietly, keeping an eye on everything that happened in the busy night time seen.
xx. she sighed lightly and then gazed directly back at him. yeah, i did, so what? i really don't care if he goes to jail or not. i walked into it. she said ruefully and continued to pace in the light before looking at him again. who are you anyway? she asked before shrugging her shoulders yet again, a reoccurring gesture for her. not that i care or anything. just out of curiosity.[/blockquote][/justify

Devon sighed and raked his fingers through his hair but didn't press the point. If she didn't care then there wasn't anything he could do about it. who are you anyway? not that i care or anything. just out of curiosity. Devon smiled at her and said, Devon. What's yours? He held her hand out to her and, now that they were in the light, was able to study her for the first time.
She was pretty, there was no denying that. Her hair was bright, really bright, as in bright red with lighter bangs, maybe a lighter red or orange, it was hard to tell. Her eyes were a beautiful hazel, matching wonderfully with her almost delicate appearance. And she was curvy, though Devon didn't dare anything more then a single sweeping glance.
And may I ask how a beautiful woman like yourself ended up with a creeper like he was? Devon hated men like that man had been. They were disgusting perverts and really they had no right to call themselves men. Yeah, Devon appreciated his woman but he would never take one by force, like that man had been undoubtedly considering. Men were stronger then women, usually, but that didn't give them the right to be assholes that took what they wanted, no matter the opinion of the opposite party.

xx. Her eyes traveled to him as she took in his appearance. She all ready knew he was doing the same with her now that she was standing in the light but she didn't have to watch his eyes to know. She has known since she was standing with her back to him. Her animal instinct told her so. With her hands on her hips and her knee bent slightly, she looked at him easily, her hazel eyes indifferent about her thoughts of his appearance while her head was reeling with it's opinions. She liked him, the way he looked, even if it was just a little.
xx. Hail turned back to him when he spoke again, her hair once again falling in front of her eyes as she paused to fix it before answering his first question. hailey, but just call me hail. She said easily as her eyes watched him quietly. The next question struck her as something she didn't want to answer, all ready feeling stupid about it but shrugging it off and explaining anyway. i had been eating while walking to where i was going.
she had left out the name of the place for many reasons, mostly, considering because it had been near dark and not many people went to the forest in the middle of the night. we bumped into each other and spilled my food. he offered to take me out to dinner and me, being an idiot, accepted. and she left it at that. She turned her eyes back to the road and watched people drive along. Her eyes were filled with boredom and she replied with yet another snide remark. could you at least try to be a little more intertaining? i have better places i could be at and you aren't the most interesting person i've met today.[/blockquote]

Devon listened, mostly wondering how she could have been stupid enough to fall for the man's trick. Then again...Devon hadn't seen the man well so perhaps he had looked very convincing. Devon doubted it. There was always something about those sorts of predators. No matter how charming they are they always seem cold and dangerous.
At her question, Devon's blue-gray eyes jerked to her face and narrowed slightly. What do you have in mind? Cause honey, I'm sure that you and I have very different opinions on what 'entertaining' would be. Devon closed the space as he spoke until there was only a foot between them. He was taller then her by one a few inches, he realized, so he didn't have to look down much. His eyes were on her eyes, and then slid down to her lips, and for a few seconds he considered kissing the woman.
No, he wouldn't do that. He wasn't an ass who would kiss a girl minutes after she'd been attacked, no matter how appealing it sounded. Devon smiled slightly at her and then stepped away from her again. Are you sure you don't want a ride anywhere? he asked, in an attempt to get his mind off of what he could do to her. Yes, she was a beautiful girl, but Devon had more restraint and self-respect then that.

xx. Her eyes danced as she looked up to him. It wasn't much, but it was enough where he was taller and she was forced to look up to him. She watched his eyees as he spoke, never pulling them away as her hazel eyes danced with amusement at how quickly he snapped back at her comment. She almost considered letting something happen. almost. but that wouldn't happen. first of all, he was human. alllllll human. nothing else to set him apart from the crowd. shifters were able to tell at least from a distance that there was another shifter near them. some had become so out of tune with their senses that they couldn't. but she could.
xx. a smile played at the corners of her lips as she chewed her bottom lip and looked up at him with a distinct look in her eyes. i imagine we do. you have no idea how far away your idea of fun is from mine.
she said with a matter-of-fact tone and began to walk down the sidewalk hazily. She always did that, walked away from a conversation and expected them to follow. if he didn't then oh well. if he did, a little more respect was all he would gain from this shifter. well seeing as i have no place to go, there is no point in waiting gas on me. she called over her shoulder before stopping under the next street light and watching him with her bright hazel eyes. She looked up and the blaze orange bangs of her fell back in comparison to the bright red and the colors stood out much better than they had before. xx. Her eyes were focused on the light before she glanced over at her rescuer again, her hair still brushed back but slowly fell forward toward her face where it framed her face perfectly. over her eyes were matching red and orange eye shadow that matched her hair. she knew that she was a little extreme when it came to looks, but that is what made her her. Hail smirked as she watched Devon with a bemused face. but honestly, you did your good deed, why stick around. i imagine someone like you has plenty of people you could talk to and plenty of parties you could be at tonight.[/blockquote]

He could have pretended to be upset at her comment but why bother, when he really wasn't? When she walked away, Devon didn't move for a moment and when he did it was to roll his eyes and follow her. For one she walked in the direction he would have to go to to get to her car and for two he didn't like the idea of leaving her alone.
Yes, he could go somewhere else. He could go to a party, sure, but the only one he knew of that was going on that night was sure to be lame. And then his date hadn't worked out like he'd hoped. Now, why would I wish to be anywhere but in your charming presence? he asked with light sarcasm. And you make it sound like I'm someone who just tries to do good deeds for credit and then flees. I finish the job, honey. Devon flashed Hail a quick, cocky smile and stepped past her, the smile morphing to a satisfied smirk. And I can't just leave you out here now.

xx. Her hazel eyes followed him with a distinct look, one that was only given off by animals, one of dislike mixed with fear. She wasn't sure why he wanted to 'finish his job' with rescuing her because no other guy would have. She wasn't even sure why she had allowed him to stay near her for as long as he had been. i am just fine out here on my own. i don't need you're help despite what you've seen tonight. I could have gotten myself out of it but that risked way too many things.
She shot back, her narrowed hazel eyes focused on his face and his reaction. She turned away from him again and began to walk off. She didn't care if he followed this time either, but once again turned around to shoot back another comment. xx. why can't you? if you haven't noticed, i honestly don't care if you stick around or not. and you don't seem too thrilled about following me around on a cold night. she shot again, her eyes turning slowly along the edge of the road and continued to walk a way, her sneaker feet making a soft slapping sound against the concrete as she walked. Hail had left him room to follow her if he felt the urge but all she would do is turn and snap at him. she did have somewhere to be, but it was in the opposite direction and it was meant to be done alone.[/blockquote]

Devon scowled at Hail and his fingers twitched towards his pocket, where his keys were. He withdrew them and pressed them into his palm. Fine. I'm just hoping I don't see your name on the news tomorrow with the headline 'Young Girl Raped and Killed.' Devon turned his back on her, still scowling. True, he didn't have any reason to try to help her more except that he wanted to, and he really didn't want to figure out that she'd been hurt.
Oh, and by the way, it sure as hell did not look like you could have taken care of it, he tossed over his shoulder as he left the circle of light from the streetlight. His car, a 2005 F250, was nearby, only a block or so away, because he'd parked it when the streets were more crowded.

xx. Hail spun around as he started to walk away, his snide remark turning her blood cold. the next made it worse and she marched after him, her hair blowing back from her face as she stormed past him and turned, standing in his way. her hazel eyes blazing with annoyance as she put her hands on her hips and lowered her voice, eyes narrowed slightly as she spat her responce. how would you know. you know about as much about me as you know about him.
she said with a glare as she pointed to the first guy she saw walking down the street. Then her eyes moved back to his, her hazel eyes staring directly into his with her anger radiating from her. xx. i could have done it all on my own, but it would have looked a little weird to him, just as it would to you. i never needed your help. but you couldn't turn your back on me because of your society morals. she said through clenched teeth and glared directly up at him. Hail didn't care if he wanted to go to his car, she wasn't about to let him. not now, especially after she was pushed to her emotional limit.[/blockquote]

Despite everything Devon couldn't help but smiling when she stomped after him and placed herself in front of him. Somehow the woman had the delusions that she could stop him from going forward, which she wouldn't be able to. Honey, I know more about you then I know about him. Devon nodded towards the guy she pointed at. What I know is that you let out your little girly cry for help and I answered. I don't give a damn if you could have taken care of yourself or not. When someone screams I am not just going to ignore it. Devon took a step closer to Hail, closing the space between them once more though this time he wasn't considering kissing her. Even though her little fit of rage was amusing and cute.
Let's say, for arguments sake, that you could have gotten him off of you. The truth is that you didn't, I did. Now, honey, I suggest you make up your mind because you're sending mixed signals. A few moments ago you couldn't wait to get rid of me and now you're under the impression that you can stop me from going any further. So Devon waited with his arms crossed and a lazy, slightly satisfied smile on his face. She probably thought herself all terrifying with her anger but Devon knew differently. It was like seeing a kitten trying to be a lion. Her bright red hair and her slim body negated any sort of dominant impressions she made, as did her big hazel eyes.

xx. Her eyes narrowed as she became more upset, which was beginning to seriously do damage to her outer shell. She was shaking and she raised her hand, gripped his chest by his shirt and half pulled, half dragged him to the alley. She gave him a single glare as she continued a little farther into the alley and behind a dumpster, just so that way her secret, and possibly his dignity, would be protected.
xx. fine, push me up against that dumpster. don't argue with me, just do it. she spat before he could say anything in arguement. i will get out. guaranteed. just keep your wits cuz i may be strong enough to drag you into this alley, but i cant drag your dead weigh out.
she said simply and glared up at him.[/blockquote]
